A drug dealer named Sollozzo then approaches Vito. He wants protection and political support for his business. Vito refuses because he believes drugs will damage the family’s influence and reputation. This decision creates conflict between the families.
Sollozzo responds by ordering an attack on Vito. Vito gets shot in the street but survives. With him recovering, Sonny takes control. He reacts with anger instead of strategy, which pushes the family closer to open war.
Michael visits his father in hospital and notices that he is still in danger. He takes action and moves Vito to safety. This moment shows a change in Michael. He starts to think more like his family instead of staying outside it.
Point of no return
Michael later agrees to meet Sollozzo and a corrupt police captain. During the meeting, he hides a gun and kills both men. This moment changes everything. Michael crosses a line and fully enters the criminal world.
After the murders, Michael escapes to Sicily. There he lives quietly and marries a woman named Apollonia. For a short time, he seems safe. However, she is killed in a car explosion meant for him. This forces Michael to accept that he cannot escape his family’s world.
Back in America, Sonny becomes more reckless. After Connie calls him about abuse from her husband Carlo, Sonny rushes out in anger. He is ambushed at a toll booth and killed. His death shows how quickly emotion leads to destruction in this world.
Vito later returns to power and tries to stop the violence. He meets rival families and agrees to peace. He also accepts that the drug trade will continue, even though he once rejected it. This shows he chooses survival over pride.
Michael returns home and slowly takes a leadership role. He becomes more distant and controlled. He marries Kay, but secretly prepares to take full control of the family.
Head of the family
Before his death, Vito warns Michael that betrayal will come from someone close. Soon after, Vito dies peacefully in his garden. This marks the end of his rule.
Michael becomes the new head of the family. He plans a final move to remove all enemies at once. During a baptism ceremony for his nephew, his men carry out co-ordinated killings across the city. At the same time, Michael stands in church, pretending to reject evil.
The contrast between the church and the murders shows how far Michael has changed. By the end, he fully controls the family. He lies to Kay when she asks about the killings, showing he has become what his father once was.
Cast
The cast is one of the strongest parts of The Godfather. Marlon Brando plays Vito Corleone with calm control. He does not act loudly or aggressively. Instead, he uses small gestures and quiet speech to show power. This makes the character feel realistic and intimidating at the same time.
Al Pacino delivers an even more important performance as Michael. He starts the film as a quiet outsider. Over time, he becomes colder and more distant. The change is subtle, which makes it feel more believable. His performance carries much of the emotional weight of the story.
The supporting cast also adds depth. James Caan plays Sonny with strong emotion and anger, which shows the danger of acting without control. Robert Duvall plays Tom Hagen, who stays calm and logical throughout The Godfather. Diane Keaton plays Kay, who represents an outside perspective and slowly realises how dark Michael’s world becomes.
