The Moonshiner is one of the five Specialist Roles available in Red Dead Online.
Description
In Red Dead Online, moonshiners operate illegal distilling businesses, secretly producing and selling alcohol for profit. Players manage a hidden operation where they manufacture moonshine and distribute it through underground networks across the frontier.
License
To start the Moonshiner role, the player must meet Maggie Fike at Emerald Ranch. She offers the player the opportunity to purchase a moonshine shack, which acts as the base of operations for the business.
The shack costs 25 Gold Bars and can be placed in one of five possible locations across the map:
- Bayou Nwa – located in Lemoyne
- Grizzlies – located in Ambarino
- Hennigan’s Stead – located in New Austin
- The Heartlands – located in New Hanover
- Tall Trees – located in West Elizabeth
Each location provides a different environment for running the moonshine operation.
Task
The Moonshiner role allows players to build their own bootlegging enterprise. This role works especially well for players who have already progressed in the Trader role, but anyone looking to own a property can also start a moonshine business.
Players purchase a Moonshining Shack, which appears from the outside to be an ordinary home. The real operation takes place in the basement, where the moonshine is produced and prepared for delivery.
From this hidden distillery, players create batches of alcohol and transport them to buyers across the frontier.
Marcel
Inside the shack’s basement, players will meet Marcel, the distiller responsible for producing the moonshine.
Players can interact with Marcel to start production, choose different recipes, and manage shipments. Once a batch is ready, it can be delivered to buyers for payment.
Moonshiner Recipes
There are ten total moonshine recipes available in the role. Only four recipes are available at the beginning.
Additional recipes are unlocked in several ways:
- Completing Moonshiner story missions
- Reaching certain Moonshiner role ranks
- Discovering a recipe during a random event
Each recipe requires specific ingredients and produces moonshine with different sale values.

Some recipes are unlocked through Moonshiner role ranks, while others become available after completing specific story missions or discovering them during special events.

Moonshiner Shop
Maggie also provides upgrades and equipment that improve the moonshining business. These can be purchased from the Moonshiner shop.
Available upgrades and items include:
- Bar Expansion – Adds a bar area to the moonshine property.
- Levens Gun Belt – A unique gun belt exclusive to Moonshiners.
- Sabotage Skill – Allows players to locate rival moonshine hideouts.
- Band Expansion – Hire musicians to perform in the bar.
- Still Upgrades – Improve the distillery equipment to create more potent moonshine.
- Flammable Moonshine – A highly potent alcohol that can be poured and ignited.
- Sawed-Off Shotgun Variant – A special cosmetic variant for the sawed-off shotgun.
- Nevin Hipflask – A decorative hip flask attached to the gun belt.
- Darrow Buckle – An ornate belt buckle with detailed metalwork.
- Moonshine Recipes – New flavors for moonshine production.
- Poison Bottle Pamphlet – Unlocks the ability to craft toxic moonshine.
- Master Distiller – Reduces the time required to produce moonshine batches.
