Jacobite Highland Officer, c. 1745–1746
A veteran Jacobite officer stands defiantly with his musket in one hand while pointing forward to rally his clansmen into battle. His weathered face and fierce expression capture the determination and loyalty that drove the Highland armies of Prince Charles Edward Stuart during the Jacobite Rising of 1745.
He wears a long dark campaign coat over a striking yellow and black tartan inspired by the modern MacLeod of Lewis sett. The tartan is strongly associated with Clan MacLeod of the Isle of Lewis and Skye. This artwork uses the pattern for its bold visual impact rather than as a strict historical recreation. A blue bonnet with a white cockade, leather crossbelt, Scottish pistol, powder flask, and traditional Highland brogues complete his equipment.
I’ve hit a pretty bad case of writer’s block recently, so I thought I’d start sharing some of my digital artwork instead. Hopefully the words start flowing again soon and I’ll get back to writing regular articles. For now, though, I’m enjoying creating and sharing these illustrations.
