Collector is one of the five Specialist Roles available in Red Dead Online. Players who choose this role focus on exploration, searching the map for rare items and valuable treasures that can be sold for profit. Compared to the other roles, the Collector path is centered around travelling the world, carefully observing the environment, and uncovering hidden items scattered throughout the frontier.
Description
Collectors are explorers who travel across the world looking for valuable objects and natural curiosities. These treasures can include historical artifacts, rare heirlooms, and unusual natural items that have been lost or hidden across the landscape.
Unlike roles that focus on combat or hunting, the Collector role rewards patience and exploration. Players will often travel long distances across the map to search abandoned buildings, remote wilderness areas, and buried dig sites in order to locate valuable collectibles.
Once enough items are gathered, they can be sold to a travelling merchant for money. Completing full collections greatly increases the total payout, making this one of the most profitable roles in the game over time.
Collector tasks
To begin the Collector path, players must meet the mysterious travelling saleswoman Madam Nazar. She moves to different locations around the map and sells special tools and maps that help players locate rare collectibles.
After purchasing the Collector’s Bag, players officially begin the role and gain access to the Collector progression system. Madam Nazar will also sell Collector Maps, which highlight general search areas where specific types of collectibles can be found.
Players must then explore these areas carefully, searching buildings, camps, forests, and buried locations to uncover valuable items. Many collectibles are hidden in places that require careful observation or specific equipment to discover.
Collector Bag
The Collector’s Bag is required to start the role and unlock Collector progression.
The bag can be purchased from Madam Nazar for 15 Gold Bars. Once acquired, players gain access to the Collector role and can begin finding collectibles around the map.
As the role progresses, players unlock additional equipment and abilities that make searching for collectibles easier and more efficient.
Collector Skills and Equipment
As players rank up in the Collector role, they unlock several tools and abilities that improve their ability to locate hidden items.
Important unlocks include:
- Divination – Allows players to sense when collectibles are nearby.
- Pennington Field Shovel – Used to dig up buried items discovered during exploration.
- Potential – Makes disturbed earth visible while using Eagle Eye.
- Intuition – Helps narrow the search area for hidden collectibles.
- Collector Saddle Bag – A unique saddle bag that allows players to carry more items.
- Refined Binoculars – Special binoculars that can reveal dig sites glowing from a distance.
- Metal Detector – One of the most important tools. Used to locate underground collectibles that can’t be seen visually.
- Equine Assistance – Allows items to be collected while remaining on horseback.
- Horse Lantern – A lantern attached to the horse for better visibility at night.
- Valuables Satchel Upgrade – Expands storage capacity for collectibles.
These upgrades make the process of searching for collectibles significantly faster and more efficient as players progress through the role.
Strategy
At first, the Collector role can seem slow because many valuable collectibles require special equipment to locate. However, once the proper tools are unlocked, the role becomes one of the most reliable ways to earn money.
Level Rewards
Two of the most important pieces of equipment are the Pennington Field Shovel and the Metal Detector. These tools allow players to uncover valuable collectibles that are buried underground, including coins, arrowheads, and rare jewelry.
Without these tools, many high-value collectibles will remain inaccessible. Because of this, many players focus on unlocking them as early as possible when leveling the role.
The Refined Binoculars can also help identify dig sites from a distance, although they are not strictly required to locate collectibles.
Types of Collectibles
Collectors can discover many different types of items while exploring the world.
Tarot Cards and Alcohol Bottles
These items are often found inside buildings, camps, wagons, and abandoned settlements. They’re usually placed on furniture, inside cabinets, or on top of crates.
Occasionally they may also be looted from enemies encountered throughout the world.
Wild Flowers and Bird Eggs
Wild flowers grow naturally in the wilderness and can sometimes be mistaken for normal herbs when viewed from a distance. Certain rare flowers only appear during specific times of the in-game day.
Bird eggs are usually found in nests located high in trees. Players typically use a Varmint Rifle or a bow with small game arrows to safely knock them down without destroying them.
Family Heirlooms
Family heirlooms are valuable items that are usually located inside houses and buildings. They can be found in wardrobes, chests, drawers, and other pieces of furniture.
Buried Treasures
Some of the most valuable collectibles are buried underground. These include:
- Arrowheads
- Lost Jewelry
- Coins
- Fossils
These items require the Metal Detector and Shovel to locate and recover. When using the Metal Detector, the beeping sound becomes faster as the player gets closer to the buried collectible.
Profit
The Collector role becomes highly profitable when items are sold as complete collections rather than individually. Madam Nazar pays significantly more money for a full set of collectibles.
Players can hold up to 10 copies of each item, allowing them to collect multiple sets before selling them for maximum profit.
Collections with fewer items can often be completed faster, while larger collections usually provide higher payouts. Some of the most valuable collectible sets include:
- Coins
- Lost Jewelry
- Fossils
- Arrowheads
- Tarot Card sets
Because collectibles are scattered across the entire map, players who travel frequently and explore thoroughly will usually earn the most money from this role.
Moonshiner Connection
Some collectibles also have additional uses. Certain rare flowers and alcohol bottles can be used as ingredients for special moonshine recipes in the Moonshiner Role.
Using these items as ingredients will consume them, meaning they can’t be sold to Madam Nazar afterwards. Because of this, players often decide whether it is more valuable to sell the collectible as part of a full set or use it for crafting.
